George W. Bush paints in simple strokes. His present hobby mirrors his black-and-white view of the world, especially in the fraught and fearful days after the Sept. 11th attacks: “You’re either with us, or with the terrorists.” That binary view bought him a lot of trouble. And it increasingly reflected how his citizens thought of him; either they loved him or hated him.

When Chen Lei takes the stage, she grasps a broomstick like a microphone and belts out the lyrics to the 80s hit “I’m Gonna Live Forever.” Eyes closed and hips swaying, she imagines she’s on 42nd street.
The broomstick, and Lei, are in Beijing’s Central Academy of Drama. Yet, as she sings in a production of Fame with Broadway directors, Lei is getting a taste of New York. And sometimes, the culture clash is dramatic.
